Chicago's MLB Team Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Deal.

In a significant move for their retooling roster, the American League club have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The deal includes a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for being named the MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking between fourth and tenth.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

The contract provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth-ever player from Japan to play for the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.
